Priti Merchant has worked as a volunteer for the past eight years for the Society of the Arts (SOTA), a 501 3(c) organization, supporting the Allentown Art Museum in various roles of increasing responsibility. Her volunteer career began as an Apprentice for SOTA (Society of the Arts) and later nominated to the SOTA Board of Directors as a Web Master. She subsequently became their Treasurer, handling budgets and finances. She currently serves as Docent Chair supporting Museum Docents who conduct theme- based guided visits of the Museum’s permanent collection and special exhibitions. Her role also includes training new Docents and continuing training for 30 experienced Docents who provide guided visits for the general public, local school, college students and the community. She organizes field trips for Docents to regional museums and art galleries. Over the past eight years she has also supported SOTA for their annual fund-raising activities. Prior to volunteering for SOTA, Priti was an Elementary School Teacher at Moravian Academy in Bethlehem for nine years. At Moravian, she was a Member of the Lower School Committees on Science, Technology and Math, as well as their all-school Diversity Committees. Priti has also taught various Elementary grade levels at Lake Highland Prep School in Orlando, FL.
While her spouse was studying at Lehigh University, she was a Volunteer ESL Teacher for visiting scholars and their spouses. Over the years her family has hosted several international students and visitors. Both her husband and son have graduated with multiple degrees from Lehigh University.
Priti has widely traveled in the US, Asia and Europe During each one of her trips, she tries to ensure a visit to a local museum or art gallery.
Priti holds a BA in Accounting and has a certification in Elementary Education. She has also completed several child development and education courses during her teaching tenure.
