Art in Dialogue: Opening Creative Spaces of Encounter - self, other and the arts

In this conversation, we will talk about how the arts provide a means for dialoguing within difference. This can happen between an individual spectator and a work, as well as in the larger spaces where arts encounters and performances occur. We’ll look particularly at how this plays out in urban spaces. As we do so, we’ll talk about the campus, LUAG and Lehigh’s new Center for Global Citizenship through the Arts which will seek out its own virtual and physical spaces of encounter in an attempt to offer some radical hospitality for our diverse ways of seeing, being, expressing and creating.
Dr. Angelina Rodriguez is the Director of Global Citizenship and Professor of Practice. Her theoretical, applied, and creative interests coil around the question of how we encounter and make sense of difference. She draws from psychoanalysis, geography and the arts to think about the wide range of strategies people, cities, and nations employ–consciously or unconsciously–to confront their multiple others, whether these others are spatial, sensorial, social or linguistic. A Latin Americanist, her area of specialty is Mexico, and she works in both Spanish and English. Currently, she is exploring to what extent decolonial and critical global citizenship perspectives might inform executive leadership development and coaching and what the impact of such work might be.
Brent Stringfellow is the Associate VP of Facilities & University Architect at Lehigh University. Prior to joining Lehigh, Brent spent 20 years in private practice with award-winning firms in New York and Boston with a focus on institutional and academic projects. In his role at Lehigh, much of his current focus is on implementation of capital projects that support the University‚ growth in student body and the establishment of the new College of Health. In addition to his work in practice, Brent has taught at Smith College, City College of New York, Pratt Institute, and Lehigh University. Brent received the BA in Design of the Environment from the University of Pennsylvania and the MArch from Harvard University‚ Graduate School of Design.
ART IN DIALOGUE is a series of interdisciplinary conversations between members of the university and the wider community - reflecting the ways in which their work is dynamically engaged with other fields of inquiry.
