Join us as we explore our neighbor to the north and gain an understanding of the culture and delicious food that Canada has to offer. Featured recipes include the quintessential Canadian Butter Tart brought to us by The Flying V Poutinerie in Bethlehem, and a Canadian inspired cocktail or mocktail. We will also discuss photographer George Zimbel who immigrated to Canada from the United States and how this move was made to keep the ideals of family and community. The Flying V Poutinerie's recipes are passed down from family members and the food truck and restaurant has made itself home in the Bethlehem community, including hiring local artists to create a mural inspired by local history on the exterior of their building.
Taste of Art weaves culture and history together by pairing cuisine and recipes from the local SouthSide Bethlehem community with works of art from LUAG’s permanent collection. Through interactive lectures, DIY- at-home tastings, storytelling, and discussion, individuals of all ages and backgrounds will experience the intersection of art, cultural heritage, and cuisine, and as a result, will strengthen their cultural understanding, well-being, and connection to their community. Interactive lectures and cooking demos are offered in partnership with Maite Gomez-Rejon of ArtBites.
Maite Gomez-Rejón is the founder of ArtBites. She has dedicated her career to exploring the nexus of art and culinary history through lectures, cooking classes, and tastings presented in museums across the country and through videos on her YouTube channel – ArtBites: Cooking Art History. Maite has a BFA from the University of Texas at Austin, an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a Grande Diplome from the French Culinary Institute in New York City. She has been a guest on the Today Show, featured in Food & Wine magazine, and interviewed on KCRW's Good Food and NPR's Splendid Table. She is also a contributor to Life & Thyme, Eaten Magazine, Gastro Obscura, and other publications. The Flying V Poutinerie
Owners Matt and Christie have been in the food truck business since 2017 and restaurant biz since 2020. Christie is a native Canadian that met Matt in college. Once Christie moved to the states she realized there was a lack of Canadian cuisine in the states and the few and far between attempts at the Canadian dishes always fell short. They decided to recreate Canadian staples such as Poutine, Montreal Smoked Meat, Peameal Bacon, Butter Tarts and Naniamo Bars the most authentic way using from scratch ingredients and some family recipes. The Flying V has served their food at the NYC wine and food festival hosted by USA today and the Food Network, they have vended at Smorgasburg in NYC, various Lehigh Valley and Philadelphia events/festivals, and even served food as far as Vermont!
