LUAG Community Day: DIY Medicine Bag with Rain Black

Join artist and educator Rain Black (He/They) for a hands-on workshop in creating an open practice leather medicine bag in the southeastern Cherokee style. Participants will be guided step-by-step in crafting a bag to hold personal items, medicinal herbs, or other small objects of meaning.

All materials will be provided, including real deer or moose leather, with vegan alternatives available upon request.

Space is limited; please register in advance.

Limited to 20 participants. Please register in advance to help us plan for your visit and ensure we have enough materials for everyone! All ages are welcome. Kids younger than 5 years old may need help from their family members with the activity.

Rain Black, M.P.H., CPH (He/They) is an unenrolled Cherokee and Choctaw descendent two spirit artist who specializes in watercolor, beadwork, and nature based artwork. He earned his bachelor’s degrees in Biology, Public Health and Art from Cedar Crest College. He holds a Master of Public Health degree in epidemiology from the University of South Florida and is Certified in Public Health. They are a community educator with 8 years of experience focusing on topics around domestic and intimate partner abuse, queer and transgender justice, foraged art making, life skills, indigenous approaches to environment restoration, and public health. They are a founding organizer of Queer & Trans Lehigh Valley and serve on the board of Basement Poetry and Widoktadwen Center for Native Knowledge.

LUAG Community Days offer opportunities to drop-in to the galleries to explore great works of art from the LUAG collection and current exhibitions through conversation, hands-on projects, and sketching. Geared to children ages 4 to 94 and their adult companions.
