Director's Message

Spring 2020

December 27, 2019 2:39PM

There is something auspicious about the start of a new year, and in this case a new decade. It’s a slate wiped clean, a fresh start--but also a time to reconnect with one’s identity, purpose, and values.  Academic museums are institutions that, at their core, focus on teaching and learning.  As part of a parent organization--Lehigh University--we advance knowledge, research, and offer experiential learning not only for students, but the broader community.

As we welcome 2020, we are excited to open the Art, Architecture, and Design Faculty Exhibition in our Main Gallery, featuring a wide range of works from painting and sculpture to digital media and design.  Join us for the opening reception on Tuesday, January 28 from 5-7pm.  We hope that you will also join us for Art in Dialogue--a semester-long series of interdisciplinary conversations that feature AAD faculty and interlocutors from departments across the University and the community.

This semester, we are proud to feature student curators with the exhibition EQUILIBRAR:  Strength in Community in the Siegel Gallery, Iacocca Hall on Mountaintop Campus.  Led by AAD Professor Susan Kart, these student-curators have selected key works from the University’s collection by artists who identify as Black, African American, Latino/a, and Caribbean.  Discover how these artists have persevered--and flourished--despite challenges they have confronted with respect to race, gender, sexuality, and country of origin.

This spring, we are delighted to host a range of programs, workshops, and events that offer something for everyone.  Join us for our Connect and Create Tuesdays, when the LUAG is open late, and unleash your inner artist--no experience required.  Our monthly Family Days on Saturdays engage young people ages 4-12 with their adult companions, and our annual Open House on April 16 will showcase all of the ways in which you can engage with LUAG.

Be inspired by great works of art as we begin this new decade.  We look forward to seeing you in the galleries!

Sincerely,

William B. Crow, Ph.D.
